Snow clearing is carried out according to priority, with main routes and collector roads always kept open first.

General Information on Snow Clearing in Hafnarfjörður

With the first snow of the season falling, it is a good time to review snow clearing procedures in Hafnarfjörður. During heavy snowfall or icy conditions, the municipality responds as quickly as possible to keep traffic moving. The Hafnarfjörður Service Center manages snow clearing and de-icing, operating patrols from 15 October to 15 April. Roads and paths are usually cleared between 07:30 and 22:00, depending on priority, but the weather determines the service schedule. Contractors are called in during peak periods. Streets are divided into priority levels, and the weather and conditions determine how effectively snow is removed:

• Priority 1 – main streets, bus routes, and arterial roads
• Priority 2 – routes to schools, preschools, collector streets, and secondary streets
• Priority 3 – residential streets and cul-de-sacs
