The number of children who benefit from Rio Tinto’s and Hafnarfjörður´s sports grant has increased by over 540 between years and are now over 5400. The first of two allocations took place last week. Thirteen sports associations in Hafnarfjörður received a total of ISK 13.2 million. It is believed that children are now returning to sports clubs after the Covid pandemic.
The sports grants are awarded for children under the age of 18 who are members of the Hafnarfjörður Sports Union (ÍBH). The award ceremony took place last week, on Thursday the 27th of June 2024, with a ceremony at the Straumsvík Aluminium plant.
An agreement is in effect for the years 2022-2024 between the Sports Union in Hafnarfjörður, Rio Tinto and Hafnarfjörður. Rio Tinto and the municipality of Hafnarfjörður will each pay ISK 12 million this year. Grants are allocated in June and December, based on applications from associations and the rules of the agreement. A total of 55% was handed out now due to the number of practitioners who train regularly in the clubs, that is, at least 2 times a week and for four months out of the year.
In 2023, 4,873 children received support from the grant, and in 2024 the number of children supported increased by 540, with a total of 5,419 children this year. Applications were requested from the member associations of ÍBH and 13 associations applied for support from the fund.
We wish them all the best and that the grants will bring them great success and joy!
