Children start primary school in the year they turn 6 years old. Primary school is compulsory for 10 years. 

The schools

11 primary schools are in Hafnarfjörður, 9 of them are operated by the municipality whereas Barnaskóli Hjallastefnunnar and NÚ are operated privately.
