Continued Collaboration of the Viking Festival

Hafnarfjörður Municipality and the Viking association Rimmugýgur in Hafnarfjörður have entered into a new cooperation agreement that ensures the continued implementation of the Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður for the next five years, from 2026 to 2030.

“The Viking Festival is one of the events that give Hafnarfjörður its distinctive character and strengthen both the cultural life and the community spirit of the town. With this agreement, we are supporting strong grassroots work and ensuring that residents and visitors can continue to enjoy this unique experience for years to come,” says Valdimar Víðisson, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður.

A strong and unique community of Vikings of all ages

Rimmugýgur is a strong and vibrant association that has built a unique community around Viking culture, where interest, education and living interpretation of history go hand in hand. With the agreement, a solid foundation is laid for the continued development of the Viking Festival, which is held annually at Víðistaðatún in June and has established itself as one of the more colorful and family-friendly summer events in Hafnarfjörður.

The goal of the cooperation is to strengthen cultural and tourism activities in the town by building on a rich cultural heritage. The festival is open to everyone and emphasizes creating an accessible and lively experience for residents and visitors, where history and culture can thrive in a creative and enjoyable environment.

According to the agreement, Hafnarfjörður Municipality will provide an annual grant to the project to support the preparation, organization and implementation of the festival. In return, Rimmugýgur commits to holding the festival annually, ensuring professional execution and safety, and working in good consultation with the municipality on its future development. The cooperation reflects the town’s clear intention to support grassroots initiatives, culture and a strong community life in Hafnarfjörður, where history, creativity and togetherness can flourish.
