Building Preservation Fund – Grants for Maintenance and Renovations of Older Buildings

The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður is inviting applications for grants from the Hafnarfjörður Building Preservation Fund. The purpose of the fund is to promote the preservation and maintenance of older buildings in Hafnarfjörður and provides grants for maintenance and renovations.

The fund may also provide grants for the maintenance and protection of other structures in the municipality that have cultural, scientific, or artistic value, provided that the work is in accordance with the building’s original architectural style and preservation principles.

The application deadline is 27 February 2026.

Evaluation of Applications

The Cultural and Tourism Committee of Hafnarfjörður allocates grants from the Building Preservation Fund following recommendations from the Hafnarfjörður Museum. Applications are assessed based on preservation value, including architectural, cultural-historical, environmental, originality, and technical condition, as well as their significance for the preservation of Hafnarfjörður’s built heritage.

Priority should be given to projects that restore the exterior of buildings, such as windows and cladding, to their original condition. Applications for work considered part of normal maintenance are generally not eligible for grants.
