The Hafnarfjörður Card – Our Own Local Economy

The Hafnarfjörður Card, a new gift and credit card, will be launched by the Hafnarfjörður Marketing Office in collaboration with the Town of Hafnarfjörður before Christmas.

“The Hafnarfjörður Card is the key to Hafnarfjörður,” says Þóra Hrund Guðbrandsdóttir, Managing Director of the Hafnarfjörður Marketing Office. “With the card, you carry the town in your pocket – or the palm of your hand – and can shop in local businesses.”

Valdimar Víðisson, Mayor of Hafnarfjörður, says the municipality sees many opportunities in the card. “Here in Hafnarfjörður, there’s a strong sense of community and great businesses, so it’s wonderful that we have our own small-scale economy, so to speak,” he says.

“The Hafnarfjörður Card allows us to promote our local shops while encouraging people to shop locally. I’m also proud that Hafnarfjörður is the first municipality to take this step.”

The Hafnarfjörður Card works like the familiar Kringlan gift card, but its “playground” is the wide range of Hafnarfjörður’s shops, service providers, cafés, and restaurants. The card can be added to your phone wallet or purchased as a physical gift card.

Þóra says the funds on the card are waiting to be spent wherever suits each person best. “This is a gift card that won’t go to waste,” she says. The card can be used to pay for food, services, gifts, or anything else offered by participating businesses. “Some shops and service providers even offer special deals for cardholders.”

The Hafnarfjörður Card makes an excellent gift, and note that recipients don’t pay tax on the card, unlike standard bank cards. The card will be available from December 5th.
