Major concert on the 75th anniversary of the music school
“The concert is getting greater by the minute,” says Eiríkur Stephensen, principal of Hafnarfjörður´s Music School, but the school celebrates its 75th anniversary with two major concerts on Saturday April the 5th. Around 300 individuals will perform.
Thousands have studied at the music school
Around 100 members of Hafnarfjörður´s Music School brass band will perform the song Uprising by the English rock band Muse at their 75th anniversary concert on Saturday, the 5th of April. Around 300 young individuals between the ages of five and twenty will perform at the concert. “The concert is growing by the minute,” says Eiríkur Stephensen, principal of the music school. “We are very excited, indeed the excitement level is high. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” says Eiríkur.
Diverse music ensembles
Big Band, Symphony Orchestra, Suzuki Groups, String Orchestras, Rhythmic Ensemble, Guitar Orchestra, flute Orchestra, Piano Orchestra, Accordion Orchestra and School Choir. Friday will be spent setting up the stage. Rigorous training goes on throughout the week. Tickets can be purchased through Tix.is and by the entrance. Eiríkur says that around 600 children are studying at the school this winter. This has been the case for the past 20 years, and therefore many thousands have studied at the school since it was founded. “There are quite a few professional musicians who have graduated from the school. Even the prime minister was a piano student here,” says Eiríkur, who took over the school in 2018.
Great Acts at the Anniversary Concert
“The idea was always to get as many students involved as possible. These are pretty large acts. Guitar and flutes together. 100-person brass band. 12 on the piano, six students playing on two grand pianos,” he describes. “Then we have a choir with accordion and string playing. Symphony Orchestra, Suzuki Ensembles and a jazz band.” He continues.
Eyþór Ingi performs
Singer Eyþór Ingi sings with both the big band and the brass band at the concert, which are two this Saturday. The first concert will start at at 1 p.m. and the later one at 3 p.m. “It will be a great moment and a fun experience for the students to play in such large bands. They experience something completely new – different than usual – and you can experience it with them,” says Eiríkur and encourages as many people as possible to come and enjoy this moment with them.
Tickets are available at TIX.is and at the entrance.
Congratulations on your birthday!
- Every square meter of the rehearsal area is well used these days as the band is big. The next few days will be used to set everything up in the gymnasium on Strandgata for the big concert this Saturday.
