Children's Prosperity

All children have the right to receive the services they need when necessary. Children and their families have access to a child prosperity service contact who assists them in accessing appropriate support.

Integrated Services

Children's Prosperit...

New legislation on integrated services for the prosperity of children has come into effect in Iceland. The goal is to ensure that children and parents have easy access to the services they need and receive the right support at the right time, from the right professionals.

Coordinator of Service for Child Prosperity

All children under the age of 18 and their families have access to a designated Coordinator of Service. This person is based in the child’s immediate environment.

  • From pregnancy until the child begins preschool, the Coordinator of Service is a staff member from the local healthcare center.
  • Once the child is enrolled in preschool, primary, or secondary school, the Coordinator of Service is a staff member at the child’s school.
  • Children who do not fall into these categories have access to a Coordinator of Service through the social services of Hafnarfjörður.

The role of the Coordinator of Service includes:

  • Acting in the best interest of the child
  • Collaborating and consulting with the parents and the child
  • Providing information about services that support the child’s prosperity
  • Assisting in securing an initial assessment of the child’s needs
  • Coordinating and following up on the integration of first-level services
  • Notifying the municipality if a case manager needs to be appointed
  • Participating in the work of a support team as applicable

Services for children are provided across three levels of support. It’s important to note that it is the service that is tiered, not the child’s case. This means that a child may receive support from more than one service level at the same time.

Case Manager and Support Team

When a child requires more complex services at level 2 or 3, a case manager is assigned from social services or child protection services. The case manager acts in the best interest of the child and works in close collaboration with both the parents and the child.
