Transfer within Hafnarfjörður

You apply for transfer between preschools through Vala. Applications must be received before 1st of February every year. Transfer applications are processed before main admission takes place.

Transfers of children between preschools depend on the situation in each of them, most commonly they are performed after the summer closing of preschools.

Transfers between municipalities

Preschool children should normally be in preschool in the same municipality as their legal residency. Children who move between municipalities in the Reykjavík area can stay in their old preschool for up to 6 months from the change of legal residency, as long as they are on a waiting list in the new municipality. Usually, they can start their new preschool within 6-12 months.

Applications for extension

Applications for extension of preschool placement are made through the principal of the preschool they are currently attending. The approval of the municipality you are moving from is required.

Children moving to Hafnarfjörður before registration age in Hafnarfjörður that are attending preschool or infant day care in a different municipality, receive same as for day care until the children reach registration age.
