Symbolic gift to newborns in Hafnarfjörður

We extend our warm welcome to newborn Hafnarfjörður residents!

Hafnarfjörður Township invites new parents to collect their gift for newborn Hafnarfjörður residents at Hafnarfjörður Library, more specifically in the children’s section of the library, the perfect place for new parents to get together for reading, education, relaxation and chats. The gift is part of efforts to further promote Hafnarfjörður as a family friendly community and officially welcome newborn Hafnarfjörður residents into this world. Soon after the birth of their child, parents receive a postcard from the township which they must bring along when the gift is collected. The QR code on the card and on the gift voucher that comes with the gift guides the parents to this site, aiming to gather in one place information on the services on offer and available options for children in Hafnarfjörður and their parents.

We welcome you to our site, which is specifically tailored to the needs of the family!

The gift’s contents

The gift contains children’s clothing, a soft toy and two books, one for the parents and another for the child. The books are The First 1000 Days by Sæunn Kjartansdóttir and a Mimi book for reading to the child. There are four Mimi books, and it varies which book comes with each gift. The children’s clothes are supplied by Mói, an Icelandic company whose goal is to design and manufacture stylish and funky children’s clothes with a dash of attitude. On deciding the contents of the gift, environmental considerations, i.a. utility value and gender neutralism, were used as the guiding principle. The gift’s contents are subject to change; however, the aforementioned will always be used as a guide when selecting the items. It should be noted that the contents of the gift cannot be returned.

The protagonist in the story, Mimi, tells short stories that are supported with simple sign use to stimulate the child’s speech with regard to word formation. The uniqueness of the communication methods that Mimi uses is that the signs are tailored to the needs and mindset of children. The signs are based on simple and natural signs with motion, which are later used systematically to support spoken language. Once word formation is established, the symbolic communications are replaced with the use of terms. The Mimi Saga issues educational material in the form of books and virtual lectures that benefit children and their families, as well as professionals. All about the book
