The largest swimming centre in Iceland

The swimming pool is indoors. It is 50 m wide and is usually separated with a bridge, making half of the pool 25 m in length and the other half 50 m. Ásvallalaug was inaugurated on 6 September 2008.

The swimming centre in Ásvallalaug is the biggest in Iceland, around 6,000 m².

The centre also houses Reebok Fitness in a 600 m² space, Ásmegin physical training and the recreational centres for the town‘s swimming association – Sundfélag Hafnarfjarðar – and Íþróttafélagsins Fjarðar. 

Accessibility for people with disability

A pool lift with a custom-made wheelchair and a wristband with a remote is available for all who have trouble accessing the larger pools. The pool lift is made by Poolpod and was originally developed for the 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority. 

The NGO Sjálfsbjörg provides this information on accessibility in Ásvallalaug:

• Access. Four spacious and labelled parking spaces for people with disability outside the building’s entrance. Direct entrance from the parking lot. There are no thresholds, and the door entrance is wide.
• Changing rooms. There is a short distance from the reception to the changing rooms. There are two special changing rooms, and it is possible for an assistant of the opposite sex to assist in both rooms since the rooms have an entrance into the hallway. Both rooms are equipped with shower chairs. There are accessible toilets next to these changing rooms.
• Facilities around pool and tubs. Movable lift by the pool. All pools and tubs are accessed via steps, which all have handrails.
• Discount. There is free access for people with disability who submit a disability certificate.

A popular pool for families with children

The pool area has a children’s pool (90–110 cm deep) and a 10 m wading pool with toys for the youngest. The temperature of the children’s pool is 32°C, whereas a regular pool has a temperature of 28°C. The inside temperature is always around 30°C. The inside area also has a popular water slide, three hot tubs and a steam bath. Outside you will find two hot tubs and a nice area for sunbathing.
