Women’s Alliance in Hafnarfjörður Receives a Flag

The flag of the Women’s Alliance in Hafnarfjörður was inaugurated during a joyful gathering at the Kiwanis House yesterday.

The association is an umbrella organization for six women’s groups in Hafnarfjörður, founded on 11th of October 1972. The member organizations are the Women’s Association of Hafnarfjörður Church, the Women’s Association of the Free Church, the Sisterhood of Víðistaðasókn, Vorboðinn – Independence Party Women, Harpa – Progressive Party Women, and Hrund – Women of the Craftsmen’s Association.

“There was a great turnout, an enjoyable book reading, an uplifting message from Reverend Milla, and wonderful time spent together,” says Elfa Sif Jónsdóttir, the group’s spokesperson.

“We have felt in recent months that we were missing a ceremonial flag,” says Elfa Sif. Hafnarfjörður municipality supported the production. The emblem on the flag was designed by Gunnar Hjaltason, a goldsmith and painter in Hafnarfjörður. He has also crafted the alliance’s shield and a silver model to be worn as a pendant or brooch. Barbara adorns the emblem. “Yes, it’s wonderful to receive a flag in this important year for women’s rights.”

Hafnarfjörður municipality congratulates the association on its new symbol.
