The First Day of Summer 2026 will be celebrated with a wide variety of festivities all around Hafnarfjörður. Swimming pools at Ásvallalaug and Suðurbæjarlaug will be open from 8:00–17:00.

12:00 Hafnarfjörður’s Víðavangshlaup running event in downtown Hafnarfjörður

Warm-up begins at Thorsplan at 12:00. The run will go along Strandgata and will be divided into age groups after the warm-up. There is no participation fee and registration takes place by showing up on site. Winners in each category receive trophies and all participants receive medals provided by the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður. After the race, the athletics department of FH will introduce track and field events at Thorsplan, where participants can try the long jump and shot put. Strandgata will be closed to traffic during the race and until the parade departs for Víðistaðatún at 13:15.

12:00–16:00 Hafnarfjörður Library – the Viking association Rimmugýgur presents Nordic fencing and rune reading

13:00 Birita í Dali joins us to talk about divination runes and rune readings, as it is important to know what the summer has in store
14:00 Brave warriors arrive and engage in a spirited combat for everyone’s enjoyment

13:00–16:00 Open house at the sailing club Þyt, Strandgata 88

Beginners and experienced sailors are invited to try kayaking (ages 9 and up) or rowing boats. Those with experience may sail dinghies if weather conditions allow.

All summer long, the sailing club Þyt will host open house sessions on Thursdays from 17:00 to 22:00 and Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00. Everyone is welcome.

13:15 Parade from Thorsplan to Víðistaðatún

The parade will depart from Thorsplan along Strandgata, through Bæjartorg, into Vesturgata through Merkurtorg, Vesturtorg and Flókatorg, along Flókagata, turning onto Hraunbrún and up Garðavegur, ending at Víðistaðatún accompanied by the brass band of the Hafnarfjörður Music School.

13:30–16:00 Family program at Víðistaðatún organized by the scout group Hraunbúar

Fun and diverse scout activities for the whole family at Víðistaðatún and the Hraunbyrgi scout center. Coffee sales in Hraunbyrgi and sales stalls at Víðistaðatún offering cotton candy, slush drinks, popcorn and more.
