Fishermen’s Day will be celebrated in Hafnarfjörður this upcoming Sunday, June 1st, with a festive program honoring fishermen and the town’s connections to the sea. Hafnarfjörður has challenged each neighborhood to participate in this year’s rowing competition. Which neighborhood has the strongest crew? Which captain will bring their vessel into port first?

Fishermen’s Day is filled with treats this year as before

• Coffeehouse buffet at Kænan between 13-17
• Open house at Íshúsið art house and Ægir 220
• Fun and games will be at the adventurous harbor between 13-17
• There will be a competition for who is the strongest man in Iceland at the harbor

Indeed, there are so many fun activities on offer this year and it is well worth planning in advance so that the day will be perfect:

Morning events

• 8:00 AM – Flags are raised at the festival site by the harbor.
• 10:00 AM – The Hafnarfjörður brass band plays at Hrafnista.
• 10:30 AM – Flower wreath laid at the sailors’ memorial by Víðistaðakirkja church.
• 11:00 AM – Fishermen’s Day service at Víðistaðakirkja church.
• Herjólfsgufan at Langeyrarmalir – Sauna and the sea in perfect balance from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Program by the harbor between 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

• Rowing competition – Exciting race at the harbor from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
• Strongest man in Iceland – Strength competition at the harbor area from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
• Boat trip – A boat trip offered by Hafnarfjörður´s harbor at Óseyrarbryggja from 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM.
• Boat workshop – Build your own boat at Íshús Hafnarfjarðar.
• Fish exhibition at Hafró – Explore the diverse marine life at Háabakki.
• Sailing club Þytur – Open house at the club on Strandgata 88.
• Coffeehouse buffet at Kænan – Enjoy refreshments at Kænan by the harbor.
• Björgúlfur calls – Coffee, cakes, and a pillow fight at Flensborgarhöfn.
• “Show your strength” – Arm strength competition at the monument commemorating the presence of the Germans in Hafnarfjörður.
• Coast Guard helicopter – Rescue exhibition by the Coast Guard.
• The fire department at Fornubúðir with vehicles, equipment, and smiles! – Come and greet our heroes!

Shopping, exhibitions, and culture

• Open at SIGN, jewelry store, Fornubúðir 12, from 1 PM to 4 PM, where beautiful Icelandic jewelry is designed and crafted. Sigurður Ingi the goldsmith and owner is on duty. 💍 Come visit!
• “Seafarer Life / Sjómannalíf – Júlí GK 21” – Screening of a documentary about fishing with the innovative trawler Júlí GK 21 in the meeting room of the Marine Research Institute (Hafró) from 1 PM to 4 PM.
• Hafnarfjörður´s Heritage Museum (Byggðasafn Hafnarfjarðar) – New exhibition at Pakkhúsið. Pakkhús, Sívertsen house, and Beggubúð will be open from 11 AM to 5 PM.
• Exhibitions at Hafnarborg – “Ode to Color”,  by Sveinn Björnsson in Sverrissalur and “At Peace with Material and Spirit”, by Eiríkur Smith in the main hall. Open from 12 PM to 5 PM.

You don’t have to look far – just a stone’s throw from the festival area, four fantastic cafes and restaurants await you by Strandgata 75, where you can enjoy dining for all tastes:

• ☕️ Pallett coffee – Hot coffee, fresh cakes, and a relaxed atmosphere. Perfect for a refreshment during the day. Open from 11:00 to 17:00.
• 🍕 Sydhavn-Figo – Light and lively atmosphere with wonderful Italian dishes and drinks. Open from 11:30 to 23:00.
• 🎉 There will be fun at Fjörukráin on Fishermen’s Day where we honor the heroes of the sea – the outdoor area will be open, happy hour for adults and free popcorn available for the kids while supplies last – from 11:30.
• 🍽 Von mathús – A splendid dinner house offering exquisite food in a cozy setting. Open from 17:00 to 21:00.

Guests are encouraged to park legally in parking spaces near the event area or in the town center, walk or take the bus, as the harbor area is closed to all vehicle traffic during the celebrations.

Bathroom facilities can be found at the Þytur Sailing Club, Íshús Hafnarfjarðar, Ægir 220, Kænan, by the oil pier and the Marine Research Institute (Hafró).

Drone flying is prohibited in the festival area.
