The human body is the subject of Guðrún’s paintings. A human expression through the body; flesh and countenance have always woken her interest. The subject – human beings – is expressed in its core, without a mask or any attempt to conceal its essence. Guðrún has experimented with different materials in her pursuit of the right texture, in the process of creating a painting, the subject guides her direction and outcome. Guðrún seeks to examine contrasts in brushwork and color, as well as within the subject matter itself. The impulse to paint is in itself a need for the expression of emotion, an interpretation of existence and experience; a material and a subjective need. The painting thus serves as a language which cannot necessarily be understood through words. Guðrún approaches the subject with varying brushstrokes, whether rough or fine, and uses light and shadow to capture the atmosphere that the subject calls for.
Guðrún Steingrímsdóttir graduated from the visual arts programme at Fjölbrautaskólinn í Breiðholti in 2009. In the spring of 2022, she completed a diploma in painting from the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts. Following her graduation, she received an Erasmus grant and attended a three-month intensive course in drawing, painting, and art history at The Florence Academy of Art in the autumn of 2022. That same winter, she also completed two courses at Accademia del Giglio in Florence. Guðrún participated in a group exhibition at Gallerí Vest in 2015, her graduation exhibition at the Reykjavík School of Visual Arts in 2022, and held solo exhibitions at Gallerí Göng in the autumn of 2022 as well as Gallerí Grásteinn in March 2024
