Winter break in Hafnarfjörður

The winter break this semester in the primary schools in Hafnarfjörður will be on the 23rd and 24th of February. There will be free admission to the swimming pools and the museums offer an exciting program for children and their families. 

Hafnarfjörður Library (Strandgata 1) invites children and families the chance to explore virtual reality equipment. 

Hafnarfjörður Museum (Vesturgata 6) will be open during the winter break and also the upcoming weekend and welcomes students and their families. In Pakkhúsið, (Vesturgata 6) guests can participate in a fun and informative treasure hunt that leads participants through the museum. The admission is free.

Hafnarborg (Strandgata 34) offers two types of fun and creative workshops over the break, and welcomes children to come and participate at the museum from 13-15 both days. 

Thursday, February 23rd 

• FREE admission to the swimming pools. Ásvallalaug and Suðurbæjarlaug (from 6:30-22) and Sundhöll Hafnarfjarðar (from 6:30 – 21) 
• Hafnarfjörður museum is open from 11-15. Treasure hunt and interesting exhibitions. 
• Sculpture workshop at Hafnarborg from 13-15. We will work with plaster to create sculptures in the spirit of the artist Sóley Eiríksdóttir, whose works are currently on display in the museum. Sóley herself worked on her larger sculptures by covering a frame with concrete, but that’s where the plaster comes in this time. The instructor is Unnur Mjöll S. Leifsdóttir, visual artist and expert at Hafnarborg museum. 
• VR play at Hafnarfjörður library at 15. 
• Open house at Brettafélag Hafnarfjarðar, Flatahraun 14, from 10-14. Free entry and free equipment to borrow. Open to everyone (skateboards, scooters and BMX). 
• Open classes at Listdansskóli Hafnarfjarðar. Ballet, jazz and improv dance at 10, 11 and 12:15 and silk at 12:10, 13:15 and 14:15. Maximum number per session and registration required. 

Friday, February 24th 

• FREE admission to the swimming pools. Ásvallalaug and Suðurbæjarlaug (from 6:30-22) and Sundhöll Hafnarfjarðar (from 6:30 – 21) 
• Hafnarfjörður museum is open from 11-17. Guided tour at 13 for children. 
• Planetary art workshop at Hafnarborg at 13-15. Participants will work with various colourful materials to create their own planets that change in rotation and light. Together the planets will then form a solar system that lights up the „sphere“. The instructor is Erla Zoëga, visual artist. 
• Minecraft course at Hafnarfjörður Library from 13-15. Limited space and registration at bokasafn@hafnarfjordur.is  

• Open house at Brettafélag Hafnarfjarðar, Flatahraun 14, from 10-14. Free entry and free equipment to borrow. Open to everyone (skatboards, scooters and BMX). 

The winter break is also a great opportunity to explore dozens of spectacular nature areas in Hafnarfjörður and walkers, hikers and nature enthusiasts can also explore walking and biking routes around the vicinity of Hafnarfjörður.
