A new trash bin for your home

Distribution of new garbage containers will begin on May 22 and end on July 14

We are on our way to your house with the new trash bin. Distribution in Hafnarfjörður will begin Monday, May 22 at Hvaleyrarholt and ends on Friday, July 14 at Vellir. Residents who have their phone number registered with 1819.is will receive a text message about the delivery.

One new two-part container at a detached house

Detached houses (one-, two- and three-detached houses) will receive 240L divided into two for food scraps and mixed waste. New bins will be added to detached houses, and the principle will be three bins for each detached house. The existing bins will be relabeled for plastic on the one hand and paper on the other.

New container for food scraps at apartment buildings

All apartment buildings receive a 240L brown container for food scraps and the number of containers is tailored to the needs of each apartment building. Gray bins will be relabeled for mixed waste and plastic and blue bins will be relabeled for paper.

Baskets and paper bags for all households

Along with the distribution of new containers, all households in Hafnarfjörður will receive a plastic basket and a paperbag for the collection of food scraps within households. The basket ensures that there is air around the paperbag so that it stays dry. The paperbags play a key role in making usable compost from the food scraps. It is a good idea to regularly empty the paperbags into a new bin under food scraps.

Baskets and bags can be obtained from the service center

Residents in non-approved apartments can access a plastic basket and a paperbag during opening hours at Hafnarfjarðarbær’s service center at Norðurhella 2, starting on May 22.

Requests for special solutions will be considered starting in the fall

Residents are encouraged to test the new arrangement and number of bins this summer and into the fall to get the best possible impression of the household’s needs, and not least the sorting that relates to paper and plastic. The waste collection frequency will remain the same, every 28 days for plastic and paper and every 14 days for food scraps and mixed waste. In the fall, when the distribution ends, it will be possible to buy another 240L waste container for plastic and paper and replace it with a 240L plastic container and a 240L paper container.
