Inauguration of the new ski facilities in Bláfjöll

Drottning, Gosi and a new Snow production system

This past weekend, there was the inauguration and formal opening of the new ski facilities in Bláfjöll. That is, the new chairlifts, Drottning and Gosi, and snow production system, that has been installed. On that occasion, representatives of the municipalities and developers, held short speeches and guests took a trip with the new chairlift and explored the area in the most lovely weather. Facilities for ski walkers have also been greatly improved with new toilet facilities, snow fences and lighting. The hope is that these projects will greatly improve the user experience of the area, as well as that it will be possible to increase the number of opening days with the introduction of snow production.

Agreement on major development of the ski area

These projects are in accordance with an agreement on major development in the ski area, where work has been ongoing under the auspices of the Association of Municipalities in the Capital Region (SSH) since 2018, when an agreement was signed between the owners of the ski area: Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Mosfellsbær and Seltjarnarnes, to renovate and develop the structures in the area. The aim of these projects is to improve facilities and services for all groups of skiers. The whole project has been successful and is going according to plans. The production and installation of new ski lifts was carried out by the Austrian company Doppelmayr in collaboration with ÍAV. The Italian company, TechnoAlpin, was responsible for the production and installation of the snow production equipment, also in collaboration with ÍAV. The drilling of a production well, a reservoir for snow production, was carried out by the Cultivation Union (Ræktunarsamband) of Flói and Skeiðar. The project management was in the hands of VSÓ Consultants in collaboration with the capital-area ski area, SSH and the municipalities.
