New Stores in Fjörður Open on Friday – Fireworks Show

The heart of Hafnarfjörður grows with the new Fjörður

Fjörður, Hafnarfjörður’s shopping center, is undergoing major changes these days. The shopping center is nearly doubling in size. Preparations for the opening of new stores are in full swing, and we in Hafnarfjörður will get to see the results on Friday. Fjörður is expanding by a total of 8,700 square meters.

An eighteen-unit apartment hotel, Strand Hotel Apartments, will formally open in Fjörður, Hafnarfjörður, around the end of the month. The milestone will be celebrated in cooperation with the town of Hafnarfjörður with a fireworks show at 19:20 on Friday evening.

“We are incredibly proud of this achievement. Ten years have passed since we started this project. Three years since the groundbreaking. Now we see the finish line and want to celebrate it with the people of Hafnarfjörður and our guests,” says Guðmundur Bjarni Harðarson, managing director of Fjörður.

The hotel apartments and the larger shopping center are not the only additions to Fjörður. There are also 31 luxury apartments. Some of them have already been sold, as the location is unique, in the heart of Hafnarfjörður.

Valdimar Víðisson, mayor of Hafnarfjörður, says the development in Fjörður is one of the biggest steps forward taken in Hafnarfjörður’s town center in decades. “Here we are creating a lively, attractive town center where residents and visitors can live, shop, and enjoy spending time together every day of the year,” he says.

Guðmundur Bjarni says the business environment for retail and services in downtown Hafnarfjörður will become more vibrant through the connection with the hotel and the apartments. “The town center here will be the dream destination for Icelanders who want to experience the Advent season in Iceland as if they were on a city break abroad.”

A large number of stores will be in the new Fjörður, including Gina Tricot, Lindex, A4, Lemon, Klukkan, Daily Comforts, Emil og Lína, Kona, Skóhöllin, Lyf og heilsa, Augastaður, Leikfangaland, and Daría & Herrar, a shop selling women’s and men’s clothing. There will also be a gourmet food store in Fjörður.

“Yes, we look forward to welcoming the people of Hafnarfjörður and visitors,” says Guðmundur Bjarni. The shopping center will be the only one in the country connected to a shopping street. “Here on Strandgata there are also many stores worth visiting – especially before Christmas when the Christmas Village on Thorsplani is open.”

Guðmundur Bjarni encourages visitors to park at the old or new Lækjarskóli and stroll into the heart of Hafnarfjörður. “Now everything is coming together. This is the Icelandic way. We work until the last minute and open as soon as it’s possible.”
