Here you will find a list of courses and summer activities offered by Hafnarfjarðarbær, as well as information on the Hafnarfjörður Summer Work School. Organised activities intended for children and teenagers aged 6-16.

Summer activities for preschool graduates

During 9–21 August, or from the time that the summer closure of the preschools ends and until the primary schools begin formally, all the after-school centres in Hafnarfjörður will be offering varied and constructive summer activities for preschool graduates, i.e. children aged 6. The programmes are similar to conventional summer programmes and considerable importance is placed on outdoor activities, exercise, and healthiness. In addition, special attention is paid to playing a wide range of games. The children get the opportunity to familiarise themselves with their after-school centre and the surroundings of their school with the aim of bolstering their safety and well-being at the beginning of their schooling.

 

  • Parents/guardians are to select the option that suits them
  • Registrations must be completed before midnight on Thursday if a child is to begin on the following Monday
  • It is possible to stay from 8:00-9:00 and 12:00-13:00 on the registered days, free of charge for parents and guardians
  • The children bring a packed lunch from home and snacks for morning and afternoon breaks
  • The participation fee is kept modest. The price is for one week, half a day ISK 3,105 or whole day ISK 6,801

The programmes are divided into three – one of the following may be selected:

from 9:00 – 12:00

from 13:00 – 16:00

from 9:00 – 16:00

Summer activities for children aged 7–9

All after-hours centres in Hafnarfjörður offer summer programmes for children in classes 1-3 (children aged 7-9). Summer activities contain a varied programme consisting of creative projects, games, exercise, exciting trips, trips to swimming pools, and shared events. The programmes can vary depending on which leisure center centre is chosen. Registrations must be completed before midnight on Thursday if a child is to begin on the following Monday. The courses, intended for children aged 7-9 will begin on 12 June and most will carry on to 30 July. Centralised courses are offered in July and August while all sites are closed from 26 July to 9 August. From 3-23 July there will be joint summer activities in Lækjarskóli and Skarðshlíðarskóli. From 9-21 August there will be joint summer activities in Engidalsskóli and Áslandsskóli.

  • Registrations must be completed before midnight on Thursday if a child is to begin on the following Monday. The fee may be paid by credit card or debit card
  • Parents/guardians are to select the option that suits them
  • The group in each course is the same at each location irrespective of the length of the course each day
  • It is possible to stay from 8:00-9:00 and 12:00-13:00 on the registered days, free of charge for parents and guardians, however, it is necessary to notify the supervisors if a child wishes to stay during these hours
  • The children bring a packed lunch from home and snacks for morning and afternoon breaks
  • The participation fee is kept modest and the minimum period paid is one week. There is a 50% discount for siblings if they are together on the same course. Each week, half day ISK 5,129. Each week, whole day ISK 10,316

SumarKletturinn for children aged 10–13

SumarKletturinn is a leisure course for children in grades 4 to 7 with special needs. SumarKletturinn focuses on offering professional services guided by the pedagogical value of leisure time occupations. An effort is made to work with the strengths of each individual as well as meeting different needs. Registration is through here

 

Tómstund for children aged 10–13

Tómstund hold courses during the summer for children who were completing grades 4-7. The main goal of Tómstund is to keep children active during the summer holidays, give them the opportunity to meet other children, find out about interesting subjects, and rekindle old interests. Tómstund will be operated from Víðistaðaskóli and Hvaleyrarskóli. Detailed information about activities and course schedules can be found on the Facebook page for the courses. Art summer courses in Hafnarborg for children aged 6-12

Art and music classes will be available this summer in Hafnarborg for children aged 6-12. The basics of visual art will be presented through studies of the environment, exhibitions in the museum and creative work. Projects will be carried out in a variety of media – drawing, painting and sculpting – with the aim of exercising visual perception, stimulating creative thinking, and the personal expression of participants.

 

Three 5-day courses are available for the age groups 6-9 and 10-12. One of the courses that start 26 June will be song and music related in connection with the Song Festival in Hafnarborg. The course ends by the participation of the children in a family concert on the Song Festival on Friday 30 June from 17:00-17:50.

Summer reading for all children

The Hafnarfjörður Library offers summer reading from 1 June – 31 August. All children who have begun to read on their own can come to the Library to register and receive a reading diary.

 

Hafnarfjörður Work School

The Hafnarfjörður Work School offers fun and informative jobs for teenagers in the town. Thus, teenagers aged 14 to 16 are divided into an environmental team, art team, peer-education, and preschools. At the same time, employees are provided with a variety of education and new knowledge. All teenagers aged 14, and who reside in Hafnarfjörður, are offered a job every summer until the age of 17. Further information about work school.

The website www.tomstund.is provides information on the availability of sports and leisure activities in Hafnarfjörður. What is offered depends on the registration of course organisers, and everyone can register a course or activities on the website. It provides a simple way to look for activities by age, period and field of interest.
