Water aerobics twice a week in Ásvallalaug

“there is plenty of space in the pool,” says Kristinn Magnússon at Ásmegin physiotherapy, which teaches the water aerobic classes for 67 years and older in Ásvallarlaug twice a week. The classes are on Mondays and Thursdays from 14.40-15.20. The mayor of Hafnarfjörður and Kristinn signed an ongoing collaboration agreement last week.

Aerobics will therefore continue to be offered by the town. The goal is to promote good physical activity and health and at the same time create a social platform for people to meet and have a great time together. “Usually around 30 people attend,” Kristinn says. “The group is tightly knit and welcomes new members.”

More ease of movement in water

But why exercise in water? “People can do exercises in water that they would otherwise not be able to do on dry land. We can play with balance and stability exercises. There will be no injuries from falling in water. We are therefore able to do things that we can usually not do. The water holds us,” Kristinn describes, and says that with aerobics, people maintain their strength and abilities.

“We here at the physiotherapy refer people to the water aerobic classes, as they are  undergoing maintenance therapy. Our body needs maintenance when signs of aging starts to creep in. That’s the benefit of these classes,” says Kristinn, who encourages people aged 67 and over to participate.

“Indeed, you have nothing to lose and the company is good.”
