Björgvin Halldórsson, Son of Hafnarfjörður, Laid to Rest

“It is with great sorrow that we, the people of Hafnarfjörður, bid farewell to Björgvin Halldórsson. With his passing, one of the town’s most beloved sons is gone, a man who always carried his hometown with him and spoke of it with warmth, pride, and genuine affection,” writes the Mayor of Hafnarfjörður in a memorial tribute to our Björgvin Halldórsson, singer and Hafnfirðingur.

Björgvin Halldórsson’s funeral service was held at Hallgrímskirkja. Reverend Guðni Már Harðarson officiated. The ceremony was open to the public, and a live stream of the service was available at Bæjarbíó in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. A reception following the funeral took place at Ásvellir.

“Björgvin was truly a son of Hafnarfjörður in the deepest sense of the word. He never forgot where he came from, and those of us who listened to him and followed his journey could always feel that. He often mentioned Hafnarfjörður and always spoke of his town with affection. Björgvin was a proud son of Hafnarfjörður, and we were no less proud of him. He was named Artist of the Town of Hafnarfjörður in 2018 and was the first to have his name inscribed on the beautiful plaque in front of Bæjarbíó, a place where Björgvin held countless cherished memories.

That sense of pride is beautifully captured in a verse from the song ‘Heim í Hafnarfjörð’, which he performed with Brimkló, where it says:

,,Við Hafnarfjörð, við Hafnarfjörð,

ég held mér líki best á jörð.

Í Hafnarfjörð, í Hafnarfjörð

komdu heillin með í Hafnarfjörð.“

Björgvin’s contribution to music is beyond measure. His legacy lives on in our culture, in the music, in the memories, and in the countless moments of joy he gave people throughout the country. But for us in Hafnarfjörður, his contribution also lives on in something deeper. It lives in the feeling that one of our own enriched the lives of so many and carried the name of our town with dignity and warmth.

Such impact is invaluable. Björgvin brought us joy. He brought us pride. He gave us that powerful sense that Hafnarfjörður held a special place in his heart, just as he held a special place in the hearts of the people of Hafnarfjörður. For that, we are deeply grateful.

As Mayor of Hafnarfjörður, I wish, on behalf of the town’s residents, to express our sincere gratitude to him. We thank him for his contributions, for his devotion to his hometown, and for all the pride and joy he brought us through his life and work. His memory will live on, both in people’s hearts and in the history of Hafnarfjörður.

Finally, I extend my deepest sympathies to Ragnheiður, Sigurður, Svala, Krumma, and all other loved ones.
