More options and more ways to bridge the gap between maternity leave and preschool.

Recently, Hafnarfjörður’s town council approved the change to offer payments to parents of children from the age of 12 months, start-up support for home day care and an increase in the subsidy for day care parents.

These changes came into force on January 1st, 2023, and aim to create new opportunities and increased options for parents, give them the opportunity to stay at home longer and at the same time increase the number of daycare providers. More options when it comes to day care matters.

Payments to parents of young children not in daycare or preschool

As of January 1, 2023, parents of children in Hafnarfjörður who have reached the age of 12 months can apply for payments of the same amount as the general subsidy with children at daycare. With this, requests for more ways to bridge the gap between the end of maternity leave and the child’s schooling in preschool are met. At the same time, it is necessary to continue to find more ways and solutions so that there is a diverse and real choice for new parents, e.g. extension of maternity leave and further strengthening and increase in the flexibility of preschool stay and daycare system. Today, there are a total of 26 home daycare parents operating in Hafnarfjörður, many of whom have devoted themselves to their work and have been working in the field for a long time with good reputation.
