Enrollment in primary schools and after school activities

The first application deadline is March 1st

Enrolment of children entering 1st grade in Hafnarfjörður´s primary schools has been opened, for autumn 2025, and the first application deadline is March 1st. Simultaneously, registration of students for after school centers has been opened for each and every school. Applications for a spot in an after school center are made through Vala, but applications for primary schools are made through My pages on the town’s website.

One school district, with many neighborhood districts

Hafnarfjarðarbær´s primary schools are open to all children regardless of where they live in the town and parents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the operation of these schools. Hafnarfjörður is counted as one school district, but is divided into smaller neighborhood districts. The location of where the student resides, determines which neighborhood school they will attend. It is possible to apply for schools in other districts, and by applying before March 1st, there is a greater change of the student being able attend a school outside their school district. Enrolment of children in primary school and after school leisure centers is the responsibility of parents/custodians.

Primary school enrolment is done electronically through My pages under: Applications – Primary schools – Primary school placement. Please note that you can only apply for Hafnarfjarðarbær´s Primary Schools on the town’s website. Applications for other primary schools in the municipality and primary schools in other municipalities must be submitted directly to the respective schools and if/when this placement is approved, an application must be made for payment participation by Hafnarfjarðarbær for the school placement. More information will be sent from schools as autumn draws closer

As spring draws near, all important information from the school in which a child gets a place, will be sent to parents/custodians. That is information about school activities, including food subscriptions and a special summer school center that is available for 6-year-olds in August, to prepare for them before their elementary school journey begins. Registration for a 6-year old pre-school center takes place in the spring and is advertised separately.
