Kit and Cosplay Workshops for One of the Country’s Largest Costume Festival

“Step outside the box. Come and try. How about daring for one weekend?” asks Unnur Helga Möller, event manager at the Hafnarfjörður Library. She is overseeing the costume and gaming convention Heimar og himingeimar this year as last year.

Heimar og himingeimar will be held for the second time at the library on August 29th–31st. This is a three-day event with over fifteen workshops and activities. It will be possible to experience and take part in three worlds. The program is packed, and it can be said with certainty that this has already become the largest costume festival in the country. The festival is adventurous.

Costume workshops leading up to the festival

In the lead-up to the festival, costume workshops, so-called Kit and Cosplay workshops, will be held. There you can sew your own costume for the festival and get help with it. “Bring your own material,” says Unnur. The next workshop is Tuesday, August 12, from 17:00–18:45 at the library. They are then held weekly until the festival and have been well attended so far this summer. But a special costume workshop for children will be on Saturday, August 16, between 13:00–15:00.

“Children are welcome at Heima og himingeimar accompanied by adults, but the festival itself is intended for ages 14 and up,” says Unnur, who, with her team, has prepared an even grander festival than last year. No wonder. They expected 1,000 guests last year but got 4,000.

Adventure worlds at the festival

“I have no idea how many will come this year, but I imagine between 3–7 thousand,” she says. But what is on offer at the festival itself? Let’s take an example:

• Cosplay competition with international judges
• The Legion

“This is a festival that means a lot to many people and we encourage you to take part,” says Unnur.
