The Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður is Bigger Than Ever

Over 60,000 Visits

Well over 60,000 people visited the Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður this Advent. “We are over the moon with the reception this year,” says Valdimar Víðisson, mayor of Hafnarfjörður.

“All the weekends from mid-November were full of visitors, and the atmosphere was both fun and festive. Everyone came in high spirits and left in true Christmas and holiday mood.”

The Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður has grown and thrived for 22 years. This year marked the first time the visitor count was measured at Thorsplan, and Sunna Magnúsdóttir, project manager of the Christmas Village, notes that it was clear that more people than ever came to the town.

“The count only covers the square itself, but the area is much larger. Hjartasvellið sold out day after day, and there was a steady flow of visitors at Hellisgerði, sometimes with a festive parade from the Christmas Village into this beautiful garden,” says Sunna, noting the addition of a new café there. She adds that the increase was also visible in the waste bins, which had to be emptied constantly.

“It was obvious that people were enjoying time together in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. Over 2,000 liters of hot chocolate were consumed by our visitors,” Sunna says.

“It has been magical to watch the growth. The weather was fortunately favorable, though as anyone in Iceland knows, it can change quickly. And the calm at Thorsplan made a big difference.”

The Christmas Village also received a boost from the newly renovated Fjörður area. Visitors could walk along Strandgata and soak in the holiday atmosphere at Thorsplan.

The Christmas Village in Hafnarfjörður was a huge success this year, bringing joy to tens of thousands of people.
